Naturopaths Make Better Livers!
by Dr. Hannah Edmond
Naturopathic Physician
The liver is the body’s major organ that supports detoxification. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, the liver and gallbladder are most active during Springtime. For this reason, it is a good time of the year to take extra care of the liver, while cleansing the body after winter’s hibernation.
In general, yellow and bitter foods and herbs are supportive for the liver. Here is a list of some foods that are especially nutritious for our liver:
Beets - eat the whole beet, green tops included! You can include the beet greens in salads or steam them.
Dandelion greens - you can harvest these greens from your backyard or on a hike. Simply clip the freshest green leaves from the plant before it flowers. Be sure you are harvesting from an area that has not been sprayed with pesticides and is not exposed to high levels of pollution. For example, harvesting from a city park or on the side of a highway is not a good idea.
Sprouts
Bitter greens (mustard greens, arugula, bok choy)
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale)
Berries
Warm lime or lemon water
